From Kosovo, where he met the acting president Albulena Haxhiu, the acting prime minister Albin Kurti and the leaders of the opposition parties, the president of the European Council Antonio Costa emphasized that he is in Pristina to reaffirm the EU’s continued support for that country.
In a post on X, the senior European official also touched on Sunday’s elections, emphasizing that he encourages political leaders to make integration into the European Union a priority, overcoming political differences between them.
“As Kosovo heads to elections this weekend, my message is simple, our partnership comes with responsibility. I encourage political leaders to make EU integration a priority, beyond political differences, and to work together towards this common goal. Kosovo needs strong, stable and functional institutions, capable of implementing reforms, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the European Union and fulfilling all commitments related to the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue.“- said in his message.
Costa stayed in Pristina after earlier visits to Albania, Bosnia and North Macedonia. During the visit to Skopje, the president of the European Commission emphasized that the country should continue with the approval of constitutional changes in order to progress with the opening of negotiations with the EU. Antonio Costa is visiting the countries of the region on the eve of the EU-Western Balkans summit to be held on June 5 in Tivat, Montenegro.
