Among the Tensions in the Aegean, today the Erdogan -Mitsotakis meeting at the UN

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to meet today in New York, within the 80s General Assembly of the UN.

The meeting, scheduled for 2:00 pm Local (8:00 pm according to Albania), aims to maintain a calm climate between the two countries, without expectation for great advances.

The agenda includes bilateral and regional issues, including a potential project for electricity interconnection.

The meeting will also be attended by foreign ministers and diplomatic advisers of both parties.

The meeting takes place at a time when tensions in the Aegean have increased, after Turkey’s announcement of the Section of Research Piri reis In Central Aegean, accompanied by notifications Navtex (official maritime announcements that warn of activities such as research, military exercise or navigation restrictions on certain areas).

Turkey has stressed that the eastern Aegean islands should remain demilitarized, while Greece has reacted with unplanned training such as “Delta Force”.

Turkey has also conducted four military training, including Egypt.

The agenda is also expected to include the Cyprus issue with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who plans meetings on September 27 with Turkish and Greek-Greek leaders to resume interrupted negotiations since 2017.

Despite the signature of the Athens Declaration of Good Neighborhood in December 2023, disputes over naval borders, energy exploration and the militarization of the islands remain unresolved.

Analysts warn that military tensions and strategic interests make the region fragile and sensitive diplomacy.
