Airports across Germany reported problems caused by a breakdown in the police system

The cause of the failure is not yet known. “Our colleagues have to do a lot of things that were processed by the system manually. At the moment, we are still managing it,” the spokesperson of the federal police responsible for the airport in Frankfurt am Main told Bild.

In the meantime, the station WDR reported on long queues in the security zone at Düsseldorf airport, where the situation was the worst and some passengers waited there for up to two hours. According to the WDR, it was not possible to enter Germany from countries outside the Schengen area during the outage.

Problems were also reported by Dortmund and Cologne/Bonn. Frankfurt Airport has confirmed that it can rely on a replacement system and allow passengers to enter the country. However, the whole process took longer than usual.

There were no queues at the Munich airport, but there were still slight delays. The situation was similar in Berlin.

“It was only a matter of time before something similar happened,” said the head of the German police union, Heiko Teggatz, for the Bild newspaper. According to him, there has been a lack of money for the modernization of the IT infrastructure for three years. It should cost roughly 150 million euros. “We reminded the Federal Minister of the Interior of this very often, but she always consistently ignored it,” Teggatz added.
