An elephant in Thailand stabbed a Spanish tourist who was washing it with its tusk

The incident took place on the island of Jao Jai in a center with elephants, where, according to the police officer and an employee, Blanca Ojangurenová, a Spaniard, was washing one such animal. When she was in front of the elephant’s head, the animal stabbed her with one of its tusks and she died shortly afterwards, the agency added.

“The consulate is in contact with the relatives and offers all the necessary consular assistance, as is usual in such cases,” El País quoted sources from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying.

Washing elephants is a common activity in Thai elephant centers. Animals also perform in front of tourists in order to cover the costs of their care, EFE pointed out.

This is the first death this year as a result of an attack by an elephant. There have been 240 fatal incidents in the past 12 years, although most of them are caused by elephants entering human-populated areas. Last year, 39 people died because of it, reminded El País.
