A wave of strikes will paralyze Germany before the elections, threatens the head of the trade union Verdi

“Employees are highly motivated to push for their demands,” said Werneke. It leads collective bargaining for 2.5 million employees in the public sector, such as teachers, garbage collectors and nurses. Negotiations will start next week.

“It is now up to the employers to decide whether the strike is necessary,” Werneke said in the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, adding: “It is important that they present a good offer in the second round of negotiations at the latest.”

The second round of negotiations is scheduled for February 17 and 18, i.e. five days before early parliamentary elections. They are listed on February 23. The head of the Verdi union assured that he does not want to interfere with the elections themselves with warning bets, which would in principle be possible if the employees of public transport or the German post office (Deutsche Post), where collective bargaining is currently underway, started to strike.

“We are monitoring the elections and will ensure that they take place in an orderly and undisturbed manner,” promises Werneke. But he did not rule out a large-scale strike in transport, which took place two years ago, when the Verdi trade union and the EVG railway unions paralyzed a large part of public transport. “Everything depends on the course of negotiations,” he added.
