A Russian drone entered Romanian airspace. NATO fighters took to the air

“On Saturday morning, May 2, the Russian Federation renewed attacks on civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine near the river border with Romania. A group of twenty drones of the Russian Federation was detected by the radars of the Ministry of National Defense heading towards the area of the city of Izmail,” Digi24 quotes the ministry as saying.

Due to the attack, Romania sent two American-made F-16 fighter jets into the air, which took off around 02:00 (01:00 CET) from the Feteşti air base. At 02:03, Romanian authorities in the northeast of the country launched an air alert and sent a warning to local residents about the possibility of objects falling from the airspace. One Russian drone subsequently entered Romanian airspace.

“Ground radars recorded the short-term entry of a drone into the national airspace in the Chilia region, which continued its flight towards Izmajil,” the Ministry of Defense added, adding that the Ukrainian authorities are reporting many explosions in the Odesa region.

The air alert in Romania ended at 02:50. “The Ministry of Defense informs allied structures in real time about the situations caused by the attacks and remains in constant contact with them,” the ministry concluded.

The newspaper Ukrainska pravda reported on Saturday night that the Russian army attacked the port infrastructure of the city of Izmail. “The air defense forces intervened very effectively – most of the enemy drones were shot down. The damage is practically zero,” the Izmail regional administration said.

Russian drones regularly invade Romanian airspace. The most affected is the northern part of Tulcea County, which is located only a few hundred meters across the Danube River from the Ukrainian border.
