A court in Chicago awarded compensation to the family of the victims of the Boeing crash. It amounts to over a billion

On Wednesday, the jury of the US Federal Civil Court in Chicago decided that “the total amount of damage suffered by the plaintiff is 49.5 million dollars”. “We are very sorry for all those who lost loved ones on Lion Air flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines flight 302,” Boeing said in a statement, according to CBS News.

Almost all civil disputes related to this accident were settled out of court. In Stumo’s case, however, her family was unable to reach an agreement with Boeing before the trial, which began Monday. The airline said it respects the family’s decision.

Stumo died on her way to Kenya on her first work mission for ThinkWell, a public health NGO that aimed to improve access to health care in Africa and Asia. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa and everyone on board lost their lives.

The crash in Ethiopia happened about 4 months after a Lion Air plane crashed in Indonesia. Both disasters claimed a total of 346 victims and triggered dozens of civil lawsuits from the relatives of the victims. The American manufacturer already admitted in 2019 that software preventing loss of lift contributed to both accidents.
