A British woman undergoes euthanasia four years after the death of her only son

In 2022, twenty-three-year-old Marcus Duffy choked on a piece of tomato stuck in his throat. “When I found him, he was all purple, I thought his heart had stopped beating,” the mother, a nurse by profession, described her rescue attempt.

In the end, the rescuers pulled the bite out of the young man’s neck, but it was too late, his brain had been without oxygen for too long. He did not wake up even after five days in the hospital, so in the end she disconnected him from the devices herself, the Bristol Post website recalled.

Even after four years since the accident, the woman could not come to terms with the death of her son, during that time she also tried unsuccessfully to commit suicide.

“I tried to make myself better. But you can take all the drugs in the world, you can go to all possible therapies. In the end, they won’t help you. They don’t live your life, my life is suffering,” she revealed in an interview with the British website Daily Mail.

Finally, she sought the help of the Pegasos clinic in Switzerland, where assisted termination of life is legal. “I want to die, and I will do exactly that. My life, my choice. I can’t wait,” she added, adding that she had already informed her family about her decision – she has four sisters and two brothers.

Wendy’s suffering was deemed sufficient to meet the clinic’s criteria. A panel of experts, including psychiatrists, passed her application after months of assessment and had access to her full medical records, writes the Daily Mail.

According to Swiss law, it is forbidden to profit from assisted death, Pegasos is a non-profit organization. Clients finance medicines, pay for doctors (there is a rule that they cannot earn more than they would earn in a hospital, for example) and funeral costs. Part of the money also goes to the state treasury.
