Kurti appoints Jeton Zulfajn as chief negotiator of Kosovo with the EU

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has appointed Jeton Zulfajn as the chief negotiator of Kosovo with the European Union.

“Zulfaj will coordinate the process of the European integration of Kosovo, supported by the relevant state structures”, the Prime Minister’s announcement states.

Zulfaj has been Kurti’s political advisor since March 2021, while with the new appointment he replaces the current chief negotiator, Besnik Bislim.

Bislimi has also led Kosovo’s negotiations with Serbia, mediated by the European bloc in Brussels. In February of this year, the Government announced that in this dialogue process, Kosovo will be represented by Glauk Konjufca, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora.

In addition to the role as chief negotiator with the EU, according to the announcement, Zulfaj will also be the national coordinator for the Reform and Growth Instrument (RGF), serving as the main coordinating authority on behalf of the Government for all issues related to this instrument.

Kosovo is the only country in the Western Balkans without candidate status for membership in the European Union. The request for membership was submitted at the end of 2022, but it has not been reviewed yet.

The Kurti 3 government was voted in on February 11, however, Kosovo continues to face uncertainty due to the freezing of the work of the Assembly.

The ruling party, Vetëvendosje Movement, has taken to the Constitutional Court a decree of the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, for the dissolution of the Assembly, unable to elect a new president.

Osman’s mandate expires on April 4.

The Constitutional Court has made a decision to freeze the work of the Assembly until March 31, until it is clarified whether Osmani’s decree has been announced in accordance with the law. /REL/
