The largest number of Ukrainians with temporary protection is in Germany, the Czech Republic is third

At the end of January 2026, there were 1,260,230 people from Ukraine on German territory, which represents 28.8 percent of the total number of Ukrainians in the EU. There are 965,990 (22.1 percent) of them in Poland and 397,185 (9.1 percent) in the Czech Republic, Eurostat said.

However, the largest number of Ukrainians per population is in the Czech Republic, namely 36.4 per thousand inhabitants. 26.5 in Poland and 25.8 in Slovakia.

Compared to the end of December 2025, the number of Ukrainians in the territory of the European Union increased by 23,110, i.e. by half a percent.

“This number increased in 23 EU countries, with the three largest absolute increases recorded in Germany (+9,610, 0.8 percent), the Czech Republic (+4,130, 1.1 percent) and Spain (+2,560, one percent),” the statistics read further. Conversely, Poland (-3250, 0.3 percent) and Cyprus (-1235, 4.8 percent) experienced the largest outflow of Ukrainians in a month-on-month comparison.

Eurostat further stated that a total of 98.4 percent of people who fled Ukraine are Ukrainians under temporary protection. Russians, Nigerians and persons from Azerbaijan are represented among other citizens of third countries under temporary protection.

At the end of January 2026, adult women made up 43.5 percent of persons under temporary protection, of which 54.1 percent were women aged 35 to 64. Minors accounted for 30.3 percent, while adult men accounted for 26.1 percent. The share of boys and girls under the age of 18 was 16 percent and 14.3 percent, respectively.
