In a letter, Fico asks Zelenský to resume supplies via the Družba pipeline

Fico published the letter on the social network Facebook on Friday. In a letter addressed to the Ukrainian president, the Slovak prime minister writes that he accepted with regret the news that Zelensky decided to stop the transit of oil to Slovakia, which causes not only economic damage, but also serious logistical problems. “It is a decision comparable to a unilateral stoppage of gas transit, whereby Slovakia loses high revenues from transit fees,” said Fico.

The Slovak Prime Minister claims that he has information that the Družba pipeline is not damaged enough after the Russian attack on January 27, 2026, that oil supplies cannot be restored. “The chairmen of all political parties represented in the National Council of the Slovak Republic therefore ask you to restore the transit of oil through your territory as soon as possible. In the event that the Družba pipeline is damaged, you allowed the inspection team of the European Commission and the countries concerned to determine the extent of the damage in your territory, you accepted the European Commission’s offer to finance any repairs and the Slovak Republic’s offer to provide repair capacity for this purpose,” Fico said in the letter.

At the same time, he called on the presidents of all political parties to sign the letter. The letter to Zelensky has already been signed by three leaders of the governing parties. Fico for Direction, for the Voice party the Minister of the Interior Matúš Šutaj Eštok and for the Slovak National Party the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Andrej Danko.

Below the text of the letter there is space for the signatures of the chairmen of the opposition parties Progressive Slovakia, Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the Slovakian movement and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH).

Representatives of SaS and KDH have already announced that they will not sign the letter. Progressive Slovakia suggests writing a joint letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop bombing Ukraine and stop killing people. The Slovakia movement described Fico as a “weak man” who writes letters instead of traveling to Ukraine. “Only a weakling writes letters to cover up that he did not secure alternative oil routes for Slovakia,” said the Slovakia movement.
