Session for the election of the President of Kosovo amid the boycott of the opposition, candidacy, two names from Vetëvendosje

Under the pressure of a constitutional deadline that expires in less than two hours, the Assembly of Kosovo has started an extraordinary session for the election of the new head of state. However, the hall of plenary sessions is facing a serious challenge of numbers, as MPs from opposition parties have chosen to boycott the process, putting in jeopardy the achievement of the quorum necessary for voting.

At the start of the work, only 66 deputies were present in the hall, an insufficient number to start the voting procedure, which requires the participation of at least 80 legislators (two-thirds of the Assembly) in the first and second rounds.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Albulena Haxhiu, opened the session with a call to the legislators who are outside the hall, reminding them of the obligations derived from the country’s Constitution.

“I inform you that I have not received any notification about the deputies who are not present today, as to the reasons why they are absent,” Haxhiu declared.

She further emphasized that, based on the previous judgments of the Constitutional Court, the deputies have an institutional and legal obligation to participate in the sessions for the election of the President, in order to avoid blocking the institutions.

The candidatures, two names from the Vetëvendosje Movement

In the absence of proposals from other parliamentary groups, the race for the post of head of state will take place between two figures nominated by the Vetëvendosje Movement (LVV), who meet the constitutional requirement to have more than one candidate on the ballot.

Glaucus Conjufca

His candidacy was officially presented by the head of the LVV Parliamentary Group, Arbërie Nagavci, who presented his biography and political journey to the deputies present.

Fatmire Mulhaxha Kollcaku

The second candidacy was presented by LVV deputy, Artan Abrashi, thus fulfilling the procedural requirements to start the presidential race.
