Hamza: PDK does not have a candidate for president without prior agreement, Kurti: Waiting

The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) does not have a presidential candidate. This is what the chairman of the PDK, Bedri Hamza, said before the start of the meeting of the leadership of the party he leads, a few hours before the end of the deadline for negotiations between the parties for the election of the new head of state.

“We have asked in advance to agree that the president be elected proposed by PDK, a dignified name, which does not necessarily mean a name within the structures of PDK, but can be outside them, as long as he has the attributes and qualities that a president should have”, said Hamza.

He emphasized that he currently does not have a concrete name.

“We do not have a candidate. All are speculations. PDK does not have a candidate for president without prior agreement”, he declared.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister and head of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, went to the Assembly today to participate in the meeting of the parliamentary group. The name of Andin Hoti has also been mentioned in the media as a possible candidate from among this political force for the post of president.

Asked about this candidacy, Kurti said that he is waiting for the discussions and decisions that will come out of the meeting.

On the other hand, PDK deputy, Nait Hasani, declared to the media that if his party stays in the hall during the voting for the president, it can vote for Andin Hoti

According to the Constitution of Kosovo, the successor of President Vjosa Osmani must be elected 30 days before the end of her mandate, which ends on April 4.

For the election of the president, three rounds of voting are held in the Assembly. In the first two rounds, the candidate must secure a qualified majority of two-thirds, namely 80 votes out of 120 deputies in the Assembly. In the third round, 61 votes are needed.

For the process to be valid, at least 80 deputies must be present in the hall in all three rounds. If the president is not elected, the Assembly is dissolved and the country goes to new parliamentary elections.
