The cold wave expected to come over the Balkans and Siberia has strengthened the possibility of a snowy New Year’s Eve in Istanbul, which has not been seen for many years. According to experts, snowfall is expected as temperatures drop below zero on the night of December 31.
WE MAY ENTER THE NEW YEAR UNDER SNOW
As we enter the last week of December, the weather on New Year’s Eve in Istanbul has come to the fore again. In the megacity, which has been celebrating New Year’s Eve without snowfall for nearly ten years, the expectation of a “snowy New Year” has gained strength this year. The latest data shared by meteorological consultants and Kandilli Observatory experts show that the effect of the cold wave will increase.
SNOWFALL WILL START IN HIGHER SECTIONS FIRST
According to expert evaluations, it is estimated that the precipitation, which is expected to start from the higher parts of Istanbul on the night of December 31st and spread throughout the city, will appear in the form of snow as the temperatures decrease. Especially at night, temperatures drop between 0 and -2 degrees, increasing the likelihood of snow holding on the ground.
A “BREAK” IN TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED
According to forecasts, there will be a significant weather change in Istanbul in the last days of the year. Temperatures, which hover around 4-5 degrees during the day, are expected to drop noticeably on New Year’s Eve. It is stated that snowfall may be effective in the city due to the effect of humidity.

ORHAN ŞEN: IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL SNOW IN ISTANBUL
Known for his cautious explanations, Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen, in his assessment of the New Year’s period, said that the possibility of snow has increased. Şen stated that snowfall is possible in many cities, including Istanbul, in the east of the Marmara Region during the period extending from December 30, 31 and January 1.
Stating that the probability of snowfall has increased to 60 percent, Şen emphasized that the cold weather originating from Siberia will be effective in the direction of Poyraz. However, Şen stated that the expectation should not be exaggerated and said, “It is not a flaky, life-stopping snow; a snowfall is expected under normal winter conditions.”
SNOW MAY INCREASE ITS EFFECT IN THE FIRST DAYS OF THE NEW YEAR
According to Şen, snowfall will not be limited to Istanbul only. Snowfall is expected to intensify with the first days of the new year in the eastern Marmara, Western Black Sea, Central Anatolia and Central Aegean regions. In Ankara, there is a possibility of snowfall in the higher elevations over the weekend.
AKOM: TEMPERATURE WILL BE RETURNED TO SNOWFALL VALUES IN ISTANBUL
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) shared the city’s weekly weather forecast report.
In the statement made by AKOM, it was said: “While a mostly cloudy sky is expected to prevail in Istanbul for the next week, it is predicted that there will be intermittent showers with strong northern winds, and temperatures will drop below 10 degrees as of Friday and below 5 degrees at the beginning of the new week.”
