The Speaker of the Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, has assumed the role of the Interim President of the Republic after the resignation of Aleksandar Vučić.
In a statement to the media, Brnabic stated that she feels honored to have taken the post and emphasized that Serbia will never again have a president who has sacrificed as much as Vucic fighting for the protection and preservation of the country.
“I think that Serbia will never again have a president who fought so much, who sacrificed so much and put everything else aside for the sake of Serbia. I am honored to receive this office from such a man and to be able to maintain this position until the people choose who will be the next president of the Republic of SerbiaBrnabić said in the Presidency of Serbia.
Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vučić officially resigned on Sunday (September 27th) to lead his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in early parliamentary elections set for October 25th, where he aims to become prime minister. His political move is considered a crucial test of his 14-year rule, after nearly two years of ongoing mass protests across the country.
Vucic’s second presidential term ended in May next year, while the Serbian Constitution prohibits him from running for a third consecutive term.
