France has reconfirmed its support for Kosovo’s independence and institutions, after the conviction of the Specialized Chambers in The Hague against the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi.
The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has announced that it has taken note of the decision given in the case of “Thaci and others”, reminding at the same time that the parties have the right to appeal.
“This decision, which can be appealed, marks the end of the first instance proceedings before the Specialized Chambers, with the exception of cases related to the obstruction of the administration of justice,” says the statement published on the website of the French Foreign Ministry.
The official Paris has reiterated the support for the Specialized Chambers of Kosovo, as well as the commitment of France in the fight against impunity.
“France reiterates its support for the Specialized Chambers of Kosovo and recalls its commitment to the fight against impunity. It also reaffirms its steadfast support for the independence of Kosovo and its institutions,” the statement added.
France’s reaction follows the jury’s verdict, which found four former KLA leaders guilty of war crimes related to illegal or arbitrary arrest and detention, cruel treatment, torture and unlawful killing.
Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi have each been sentenced to 25 years in prison, Kadri Veseli to 18 years, while Rexhep Selimi to 13 years in prison.
The judgment of the first instance is not final and can be appealed. The defense of the convicted has announced that it will send the case to Appeal.
