Protests do not stop in Kosovo, gatherings in several cities with the motto “The state must be accountable”

“Our voice will be heard. The state will be held accountable” under this motto, the protesters in “Zahir Pajaziti” square in Pristina continued their gatherings demanding a full investigation and accountability from the Police, Prosecutor’s Office, Court and social welfare institutions after the reported murder of Arlinda Zekaj. The protesters reacted indignantly, since even after their demands for resignation, the two ministers Donika Gërvcalla and Xelal Sveçla declared that their departure was not a solution to the issue.

Citizen protest in Peja was accompanied by tensions, after the registration of the deceased 49-year-old woman was decided in front of the Police Station, while she asked for security from the Police officer, Faruk Muqolli, after successive denunciations. Her words drew calls from protesters, who demanded accountability for the lack of action to prevent her murder and for the officials responsible to be fired, not just suspended.

Even in Mitrovica, citizens rose up in protest in search of justice for the killing of women in Kosovo.

On Friday, regarding the incident, the General Director of the Kosovo Police Gazmend Hoxha also resigned. In the letter addressed to Prime Minister Albin Kurti, it is stated that the tragic event has prompted him to reflect on the institutional and moral responsibility that his duty carries. “Putting the interest of the state and the dignity of the institution above any personal interest, I give moral resignation from the position of the Director of the Police of Kosovo” – wrote Hoxha. Earlier, 11 officers from the Peja Police were suspended from their duties, as well as the chief prosecutor of Peja and the prosecutor of the case of Arlinda Zekajt.
