The joint candidate of the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Democratic League for president, Bekim Sejdiu, does not have the support of all the deputies of the party led by Lumir Abdixhiku. Former Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti, currently an LDK deputy, said that he is against Sejdi’s candidacy, as according to him the 52-year-old is not a unifying figure who builds consensus beyond party interests and who represents the general interest of citizens.
While Vetëvendosje and LDK are gathering the heads of the parties, a deputy of the latter said that the chairman Abdixiku has not consulted with them about the candidacy of Bekim Sejdi. While the 11th legislature of the Assembly, resulting from the elections of June 7, has not yet been constituted, the other two parliamentary subjects, the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Alliance, supported by representatives of various municipalities, continue their protests in front of the government building with calls for holding the constitutive session after reaching an agreement on the president.
AAK deputy Time Kadriaj called for Kurti to return to the Assembly and to constitute it or to announce new elections, for which she stated that her party supports them. Although Bekim Sejdiu accepted the candidacy expressing his willingness to serve Kosovo, the hearing for his election is still unknown when it will be held.
If the law professor fails to be elected president in the three rounds of voting, the Constitution of Kosovo provides for the dissolution of the Assembly and the announcement of new elections. For the election of the president, the presence of at least 80 of the 120 deputies of the Assembly is required.
