There is already an architectural and technical study, expert surveys or opinions of the authorities concerned, and the next step will be the selection of a designer. “The goal of the project is to build a modern multi-purpose sports hall that will serve sports clubs, schools and the general public and at the same time solve the long-term lack of quality sports areas in the city,” said the mayor of the city, Tomáš Martinec (ODS).
The town hall now estimates the total cost of the project at more than 140 million crowns. At the same time, the city is discussing the possibility of obtaining support from the programs of the National Sports Agency.
The project is based on experience from newly built sports halls elsewhere in the country, in order to achieve, for example, low energy consumption. At the same time, the preparatory team investigated the needs of sports clubs in Mělník.
“The aim was to find out the requirements for capacity, background and operating conditions of the new hall. This was the basis for the design of the basic parameters, the size of the sports area, the changing rooms and the overall operational arrangement,” summed up the city’s deputy mayor, Petr Kowanda (ANO).
The new hall is now designed to meet the requirements for basketball, handball, volleyball, floorball, futsal and other indoor sports. “With nets, it will be possible to divide the main area into several separate training areas,” added the mayor. The hall will also be prepared for organizing tournaments, boxing matches, cultural events or events requiring the installation of a stage or other temporary structures.
A building without windows
The main sports area is therefore designed without classic window openings. “This solution eliminates the glare of the athletes, unwanted reflections of light from the floor and overheating of the space,” mentioned Jan Denemark Nováček, the spokesman of the town hall. Technical highlights include the planned photovoltaic power plant and recovery system, which should reduce future operating costs.
On the floors, a combined system of a sprung structure and a synthetic surface is expected. Part of the equipment should be a timer, sound system, sports information system, and perhaps even preparation for television and streaming transmissions. In terms of facilities for athletes, the project includes eight locker rooms or a gym and meeting rooms, and a parking lot is also to be created.
The planned construction of the hall is not the only form of support for athletes in Mělník. A month ago, the city representatives also approved financial subsidies for local clubs in the record amount of 20 million crowns, which is almost double the amount four years ago.
