Winter tires | From when to change shoes and what sample is needed

Winter tires are specially designed tires for driving in winter conditions. They have a different pattern than summer tires, which ensures better grip on snow and ice. The law in the Czech Republic stipulates obligation to use winter tires under certain conditions:

From November 1 to March 31, the driver is obliged to have winter tires on his vehicle, provided that:

  • there is snow, ice or frost on the road
  • given the weather conditions, it can be expected that snow, ice or frost will appear on the road
  • if required by traffic sign C15a “compulsory winter equipment”

Winter tire tread depth

The use of winter tires is important for safety on the road in winter, as they significantly improve the braking distance and the vehicle’s controllability on snow and ice. If you drive on summer tires in winter, you not only risk a fine, but also risk an accident. The minimum tread depth of winter tires must be at least 4 mm. If even one tire does not have the prescribed tread depth, it does not comply with the rules and must be replaced. What are the risks if these conditions are not met?

Possible fines and penalties

Driving on summer tires in winter or on winter tires with insufficient tread is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine. In addition to financial penalties in the amount of up to CZK 2,000 on the spot and up to CZK 2,500 in administrative proceedings you also risk deterioration of the driving characteristics of the vehicle and endangering yourself and other road users.
