Von der Leyen in Montenegro: “Place very close to EU membership”

The goal for Montenegro to join the European Union is close to reaching.

This is what European Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen said, operating the first investment conference, Montenegro, near Tivat.

You are very ambitious and that likes us,“Said the head of the European Commission.

It appreciated the approximation of Podgorica’s foreign and security policy with that of the European Union, especially after Russia began occupying Ukraine in February 2022.

Russian aggression against Ukraine has reshaped our continent. Every European nation has to choose its country and side and Montenegro has already made this choice very clearly. We deeply appreciate the decision to send Montenegrin soldiers to support our training mission for Ukraine,“Said von der Leyen, stressing that Montenegro has taken positive steps and the time has come to invest in the state of the Western Balkans.

The Prime Minister of Montenegro reiterated the view that Montenegro is on the verge of EU membership.

By the end of 2026 we will close all negotiation chapters in order to become a member of the Block by the end of 2028,“Said Milojko Spajic. He estimated that the European Union is the most important strategic partner and the largest investor in Montenegro, adding that massive investments await his country over the years.
