“Russia is doing the complete opposite. His war in Ukraine is shaking the foundations of our collective security. Russia’s aim to subjugate Ukraine by force has far-reaching consequences beyond the borders of the region,” Pavel said on Wednesday to a permanent member of the Security Council, adding that he sees his abuse of the veto as clear evidence of the need to reform this institution.
“In the third year of this war, it is clear that Russia would not be able to do it alone. I want to use this opportunity to remind China of its responsibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. It is not sustainable and possible for China to continue fueling the current biggest security threat by supplying Russia with the tools it needs to strengthen its military equipment against Ukraine and its people,” he turned his attention to Beijing.
“China should fulfill the role it wants to play. Therefore, I call on it to use its exceptionally close relations with Russia and ensure the end of the bloodshed in Ukraine and all related threats to world security,” said President Pavel.
Pavel spoke about the need to reform the Security Council earlier in his speech before the UN General Assembly on Wednesday. He then spoke about the role of Beijing during the subsequent briefing with journalists. “If China wants to become a respected global player, it does not only concern the economy and finances, but also the unequivocal responsibility for security in the world,” the Czech president told them.
“And if today China is one of Russia’s main allies in aggression, then it is actually indirectly involved in that aggression, and therefore also in the inability of the Security Council to solve the problem,” added Pavel.
