TikTok has stopped working in the US – News

Under a law passed last year and upheld by a court on Friday, the platform had until Sunday to either sever ties with its parent company ByteDance, which is based in China, or cease operations in the US to address concerns that it poses a threat to national security.

Newly elected US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that after taking office on Monday, he will most likely decide on a 90-day postponement of the ban on TikTok.

“A law has been passed in the US banning TikTok, which unfortunately means you can’t use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to restore TikTok once he takes office. Please stay on the receiving end,” said the message received by the users of the application.

The Chinese app for sharing short videos that captivated nearly half of all Americans announced after Friday’s court decision that the network will go silent in the US on Sunday unless outgoing President Joe Biden’s administration provides unequivocal assurances that it will not enforce the law leading to TikTok’s ban.

Some companies that run application stores and computer servers fear heavy fines for violating the terms of the ban. These service providers have thus promised to stop operating the application, reports CNN with reference to the companies.

The White House said on Friday that the application should remain available to Americans, but due to the timing of the Supreme Court’s decision, the matter should be dealt with only by the next administration, which will assume its powers on Monday, January 20. The White House called TikTok’s warning a trick and said that it saw no reason why TikTok or other companies should take any steps before the new government takes office on Monday.

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago home in the weeks before the ban took effect and is expected to attend Trump’s inauguration on Monday.
