The head of diplomacy sent out the text of the decision in the so-called cablegram, which is a type of telegram that is transported by submarine cable.
The only exceptions to the suspended aid are humanitarian food aid and military support for Israel and Egypt, which are to continue.
The USA is by far the most important provider of foreign aid. According to the Financial Times (FT), it amounted to 70 billion dollars (1.67 trillion crowns) in fiscal year 2022 alone.
The announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs came a few days after this step was promised by former President Donald Trump, who said after his inauguration that he would stop all foreign spending that would be in conflict with American interests.
The shutdown will affect a number of support programs around the world, from health to education to job skills. According to the FT, US authorities now have 85 days to review the programs and decide which programs can continue and which will be stopped for good.
