The Russian court imposed a fine of almost two billion on Google. For non-payment of the previous one

According to the latest verdict, Google was fined in the amount of 8,008,684,193 rubles and 68 kopecks, TASS reported with reference to the press service of the court.

The court did not say what the original fine was about. But the agency reminded that Google was fined more than four billion rubles twice in 2023 also for non-payment of a previous fine – the first in proceedings in an antimonopoly case, the second for persistent failure to provide information.

For several years now, Moscow has been ordering foreign technology companies to remove content that authorities deem illegal. The Russian authorities consider, for example, reports that do not correspond to the official Russian interpretation of the invasion of Ukraine, which they already label as a “special military operation”. If the order is not followed, the courts impose fines.

In December, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Google of being a tool of the US government and serving it to score “political points”.

Google, like other Western companies, left Russia after Russian troops invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and started a war there.
