Slovakia has not experienced more abundant widespread rain for two weeks. Sometimes only summer storms appear in some places. “However, due to their torrential and local nature, they cannot save the dried soil. The water does not have time to soak into the depth, it quickly drains into streams and sewers, while not a drop falls a few kilometers away,” the topky.sk website warned of the alarming situation.
For example, in the village of Prenčov in the district of Banská Štiavnica, the volume of water for the public water supply reached its historical minimum. “The mayor called on people to stop filling pools and watering lawns. However, the locals ignored the call and water consumption in the village increased after the call was published,” the website said.
Trenčín waterworks warn of a drastic drop in the yield of water sources. In some parts of the Trenčín region, therefore, there are strict restrictions on the use of drinking water for purposes other than normal household use.
Supply regulation is at risk
The Central Slovak Waterworks reports a significant decrease in water in the reservoirs for the city of Handlová and its district of Nová Lehota. If people here do not stop watering gardens, washing cars and filling swimming pools, the company will proceed to regulate the supply of drinking water.
The upper part of the Trnavá Hora village in the Žiar nad Hronem district reports a drop in the water level in the sources to an absolute minimum. “The situation has gone so far that the local government had to start importing water into the municipal reservoir via tankers,” the website stated.
The villages and towns in Záhoří are also starting to feel problems with the lack of water. This mainly concerns the municipalities of Borský Mikuláš, Lakšárská Nová Ves, Plavecké Podhradie, Borinka and Buková. With continued high water consumption, the fluidity of the supply of drinking water may be threatened and an emergency supply by tankers may be introduced.
