“We really appreciate every form of help, including small amounts that come to our account, or bottled water or food for our wards that people bring to us. It’s a wonderful example that nature is definitely not indifferent to them,” said the head of the center Zdeněk Machař to Novinkám.
In the field of nature protection, it is a concept. He has been caring for injured animals from Brno and South Moravia for 35 years. In the rescue center that he founded in Brno and runs with his colleagues, they take care of almost 1,400 mammals and birds every year. If it is even a little possible, then after treatment and sometimes demanding treatment, they are released in the Moravian Karst. For some animals, however, the center becomes a new home, because their release due to injuries is no longer possible. Machař devotes maximum care to them.
During the fire, the operational building of the center was reduced to ashes. The flames are said to have reached a height of 40 meters. The cause of the accident is unknown. It could be a technical fault. But that will be shown by further investigation by the fire department. Even though the center’s main building turned into ruins, the operation of the rescue center did not stop. Currently, Machař and his colleagues take care of 400 animals; they are hedgehogs, foxes, hares, deer, owls and small animals that would die without help.
“During the accident, we lost our mobile phones, so helpers came to us in a somewhat disorganized manner, at the gate to discuss how they could help. Volunteers have already cut up the remains of the building. These were mobile homes, from which it was necessary to cut metal parts. The city will have two containers delivered and on Saturday this rubble will be loaded and taken away so that only an open area remains after the burnt ruins. A completely new administrative building will be built on it.

The city will also be involved in the restoration of the center. “We help animals and support them for a long time, and of course we are very interested in it being fully operational again,” Brno deputy mayor for the environment Filip Chvátal (KDU-ČSL) told Novinkám. The city management will ask for an increase in contributions to the center so that its restoration can be accelerated as much as possible.
“We also talked with Mr. Machař about the possibilities of the future background of the station so that a new mobile facility could be built as soon as possible. At the same time, there is also the opportunity of a new detached workplace of the center on Černovická terrace, where we are preparing a new nature park especially for birds,” said Chvátal.
