Rescuers help people who had to leave their homes due to floods.

“The balance is 101 dead and 64 people are missing,” a police spokesman told AFP. “It is likely that the balance will increase as our rescue mission continues in the affected areas,” he added.

In Kathmandu, water flooded a large southern part of the city. Residents of flooded houses moved to the upper floors or roofs, from where they were rescued by army helicopters, the AP agency reported on Saturday.

In Nepal, the monsoon season began in June, which usually ends by mid-September and traditionally brings heavy rainfall. Experts claim that climate change has increased their frequency and intensity in recent years, AFP noted. Rainfall recorded this week in Kathmandu was the heaviest in at least 50 years, according to the Nepal Meteorological Service.
