The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, described the attack that took place this Wednesday afternoon in front of the Serbian parliament building as a “terrorist act”. Vucic emphasized that the attack had a political motive and that it was “only a matter of time” for it to happen, as it had been warned earlier.
Vucic stated that the premises of the Serbian Progressive Party and the Movement for the People and the State have been attacked 812 times in recent months, while 29 of them have been completely destroyed, adding that “no premises of any opposition party have been affected by such attacks”.
“This could have happened in Užice, in Valjevo, in Novi Sad and above all, quite expectedly, in Çaciland, against which so many words were said,” said Vucic.
In an extraordinary statement from the Palace of Serbia, Vucic described the incident as a terrible terrorist attack on people and property, identifying the perpetrator as Vladan Angjelkovic, 69, from Belgrade.
“Today in front of the People’s Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Vladan Angjelkovic, born in 1955 in Belgrade, with registered residence in Stari Grad municipality, committed a terrible terrorist attack against other people and other people’s property and caused a general danger,” said Vucic.
The Serbian president accused political opponents of fueling the climate of violence and intolerance in the country.
“Such hatred was incited against students who want to study and against citizens who defended a single point in all of Serbia, unlike those who blocked thousands of points, faculties and schools, where terror still reigns,” declared Vucic.
There was gunfire near the Serbian parliament building in Belgrade, while a fire broke out in a tent camp set up nearby. One person was injured from the shooting, while another was arrested.
