“I am pleased to announce the release of American journalist Shelly Kittleson, who was recently kidnapped by members of the foreign terrorist organization Kataib Hezbollah near Baghdad, Iraq,” Rubio wrote on X.
He thanked the Iraqi authorities, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the US Department of Defense and other US authorities for their efforts to secure Kittleson’s release.
The Kataib Hezbollah militia has claimed many airstrikes on American military and diplomatic targets in Iraq in recent weeks. It also attacks oil infrastructure in Iraq and neighboring Kuwait. In a statement, the militia said that all the attacks were in retaliation for the Israeli-American war against Iran.
