“Twenty years ago, I started working on the series Stargate: Atlantis. It was my first ever work on television, and then I spent five years in two other series from the Stargate series, which is simply part of my DNA. I am extremely honored that Amazon MGM approached me with this offer,” said Gero on the occasion of being appointed showrunner of the new series, whose title is simply Stargate for the time being.
Gero, who also participated in the Quantum Leap reboot, will be the executive producer in addition to the position of showrunner. Other producers of the project are Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Tory Tunnell (Monarch). The creators of the first Stargate film from 1994, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, will also produce.
The plot of the new project is kept under wraps for now, but the creators promise a “brave new chapter”. Therefore, it remains uncertain whether the actors from the serial projects will return.
Militaristic science fiction began to appear on the screens in 1997. The series Stargate SG-1 followed Emmerich’s film, but most of the characters were recast. In total, it ran for ten series and spawned two spin-offs – Atlantis and Deep Space, while the latter project ended its journey in 2011. Since then, Stargate has returned only with a web series with the subtitle Third Reich, but it was not successful at all.
