Robert Fico wants to veto further aid to Ukraine in the European Union

Fico accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of harming Slovakia by stopping gas transit, and announced reciprocal measures. “If Zelensky decided to harm Slovakia and the EU because he believes that he can get away with everything, then I will veto aid to Ukraine on EU soil,” he said in the TA3 television talk show on Sunday. The head of the Slovak government warned against an increase in the price of gas in Europe.

Fico has already stated that one of the options is also stopping humanitarian aid to Ukraine, stopping electricity supplies to Ukraine and reducing aid to Ukrainians who left for Slovakia after the start of Russian aggression. “I had confirmation from Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal that Ukraine will let any gas other than Russian through its territory. But Zelensky came to Brussels and decided the way he decided,” said Fico.

The Slovak Prime Minister stated that during the meeting in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed to him that Russia is ready to supply gas to Europe. Fico called his December trip to Moscow private.

Early elections

Fico admitted for the first time that if the governing parties Hlas and the Slovak National Party (SNS) do not solve the problems with the rebel MPs, the way out is early parliamentary elections. Three MPs who entered the parliament on the SNS candidate list do not regularly vote with the government coalition, and four Hlas MPs also have their demands. “Either early elections will be held if the parliament is unable to pass laws for a long time, or a coalition agreement will be opened,” said Fico.

After the parliamentary elections in 2023, the ruling coalition Smér, Hlas and SNS had 79 mandates in the 150-member parliament. The most important government laws are still being passed in the parliament, but sometimes the legislature does not have a quorum when some rebel members of the government coalition do not participate in the meeting.
