The German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has expressed strong support for Montenegro’s membership in the European Union by the end of this decade.
During a visit to Dublin, he declared that Podgorica has fulfilled almost all the necessary criteria to become part of the European bloc.
According to Merz, the process of enlargement of the European Union should remain reliable and countries that meet the conditions should not wait due to developments in other candidate states.
He emphasized that Montenegro has made significant progress in the required reforms and remains the most advanced country in the Western Balkans in negotiations with the EU.
The German Chancellor recalled that the European Union has not accepted any new member since 2013, when Croatia joined the bloc.
According to him, the EU should keep its promises to countries that meet the Copenhagen Criteria and reward progress with concrete steps towards membership.
Merz said that Montenegro is ready for this step and should not face unjustified delays.
His statement is seen as a clear message of support for the European integration of Podgorica.
Montenegro opened negotiations with the European Union in 2012 and has been considered the most advanced candidate in the region for years.
Montenegrin authorities aim to close negotiations in the coming years and become part of the European Union before the end of the decade.
