“We will propose that presidents of the republic who have not served their entire term of office should not receive lifetime benefits in the future,” Magyar said on Facebook. The ex-president’s lifetime pension is 5.7 million forints (390 thousand crowns) per month.
After assuming the post of prime minister this year, Magyar called the current president Sulyok a puppet of the previous regime of Viktor Orbán and called on him to resign by May 31. However, the president refused.
The government majority then approved the amendment of the constitution, on the basis of which it will be possible to prematurely end Sulyok’s mandate. The current head of state would also not be entitled to a life annuity.
In the past, Pál Schmitt did not complete his presidential mandate, and he resigned in 2012, when the senate of the Budapest Semmelweis University revoked his doctoral degree due to plagiarism. According to the Hungarian media, Schmitt had to copy up to 180 pages from the work of the Bulgarian sports historian Nikolaj Georgiev in his 215-page doctoral dissertation.
