It’s getting colorful around Russia. The number of people interested in joining the EU is increasing

“The draft law on the initiation of the process of Armenia’s membership in the EU was submitted to the National Assembly for consideration. Now the government must comment on it. We propose to express a positive attitude,” said Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzojan, according to the server.

According to him, Armenia had a “relatively intense and dynamic relationship” with the EU in recent years.

“We dealt (with the EU) with rich content covering various areas. The EU has expressed strong political support for Armenian democracy. (…) The EU has also expressed its readiness to support the strengthening of Armenia’s economic resilience,” Mirzojan said, adding that, based on this, he “proposes to respond positively” to the submitted bill.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan responded to the proposal by saying that the government does not oppose it. However, he emphasized that this law may not ultimately mean that the country will join the EU.

“Such a decision cannot be made through a law and a government decision. This can only be done through a referendum. There is no other option,” he said.

Pashinyan further stated that after the parliament approves the bill, Armenia must discuss with the EU the plan envisioned by the bloc, as well as the plan envisioned by Armenia. “We should work out a detailed plan together,” he concluded.

Moldova approved the referendum

The European Union now consists of 27 countries, the last to join was Croatia in 2013, in 2020 the United Kingdom left. Currently, 11 countries are interested in joining the EU, but the path to membership can be long.

Access to the EU is conditioned by the so-called Copenhagen criteria, which countries entering the EU must meet. It is divided into three groups: political (institutional stability, democracy, rule of law and observance of human rights and respect for minorities), economic (functioning market economy) and legislative (harmonization of laws with the body of European law).

One of those interested in joining the bloc is, for example, Moldova, which at the end of October in a referendum voted to enshrine entry into the EU in the constitution. The result was close, about 50.5 percent of people voted in favor. At the same time, Moldovans also elected the president, who became Maia Sanduová for the second time. Russia, which financed the disinformation campaign in the country, subsequently called the elections unfree.

On the other hand, the Georgian parliament, led by the pro-Russian party Georgian Dream, voted to delay EU accession. It approved the suspension of EU accession negotiations until 2028.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is also interested in membership. Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Ukraine and Turkey also stand for it.

The Russian Federation generally resents the expansion of Western blocs well. This applies to both the EU and the North Atlantic Alliance. Russia itself belongs to the BRICS grouping, which expanded to include Indonesia on the first of January this year.

It also belongs to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), which is a supranational organization founded in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union, within which the states were supposed to coordinate their policies on some issues.

This includes, for example, Moldova, whose government announced its intention to withdraw from the grouping in 2023. In July 2023, it adopted a law on the termination of the CIS membership agreement.

Russia has been occupying Moldovan Transnistria since the beginning of the 1990s, and at the same time, in February 2023, it canceled the decree from 2012 that supported the sovereignty of Moldova.

Security issues are dealt with by Moscow together with the states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which includes, for example, Armenia. But in June 2024, she announced her intention to withdraw from the group, but OSKB still lists it on its website. Earlier, Uzbekistan also belonged to the organization, but it suspended its membership in 2012.
