The European Union’s special envoy, Peter Sorensen, has held key meetings in Belgrade with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and chief negotiator Petkovic to unlock the dialogue process. During the talks, the implementation of the law for foreigners and the progress of the agreements reached so far in Brussels were widely discussed.
Through a message on social networks, Sorensen evaluated the meeting as quite constructive, saying that “we agreed on the need to work together for the benefit of all”.
On the other hand, President Vucic expressed his concern for the safety of the Serbian population in Kosovo, accusing Pristina of selective application of laws. The Serbian head of state underlined that unilateral actions increase tensions on the ground, so according to him, “the strong commitment of the European Union is essential to prevent provocations”.
He again demanded the formation of the Association of Serb-majority municipalities as a condition for the fragile stability in the region.
This meeting follows Sorensen’s visit to Pristina with Prime Minister Albin Kurti, where some temporary facilities were offered to Serbian citizens.
Meanwhile, the head of the government of Kosovo has declared from North Mitrovica that state institutions are at the service of all citizens without any distinction.
Diplomatic efforts are being closely coordinated with the US Department of State to find a common language between the parties.
However, a high-level meeting between the two countries has been missing since September 2023, despite the readiness shown by Brussels.
