Croatian Minister of Health Irena Hrstičová confirmed the death of a seven-year-old girl in the attack that took place at the Prečko elementary school in Zagreb, according to HRT.
“According to the information I have, the paramedics tried to resuscitate her on the field,” said Hrstičová, adding that five of the six injured had to be taken to the hospital.
Croatian police said that the incident took place around 9:50 am. “The school campus is closed and several groups of children have been taken to safety,” she said, adding that the school management had called the parents to pick up the children.
The police described the attacker as a “young man” and said that they had taken him into custody. The website Index.hr later reported that the attacker is 19 years old and, according to some witnesses, is a former pupil of the school.
At the same time, it became clear that he was being treated for psychological problems and was hospitalized several times because of them. “He was mentally ill, emotionally very unstable, suffered from self-harm,” said the attacker’s mother. “I prayed that they would not let him out of the institution. but the doctor sent him home, saying take care,” she added, according to the website Index.hr.
The Ministry of Health has already sent an inspection to the institution where the attacker was being treated to find out the circumstances of his release. The management of the psychiatric clinic claims that he was attending outpatient treatment.

Six ambulances and a helicopter responded to the scene. The injured, some of whom have stab wounds on the head, were taken to Zagreb hospitals. Two of the children are at the children’s clinic.
“One is seven and the other is eleven. They have several stab wounds, but according to doctors, their lives are out of danger,” HRT reported.
The injured child, who was transported by helicopter to a hospital in the Dubrava district of Zagreb, is also out of danger. But the surgeons had to operate on him because the attacker caused deep stab wounds to his neck and back. According to Index.hr, the procedure lasted one and a half hours.

The perpetrator and the teacher are in the Sveti Duh hospital in Zagreb. The teacher’s condition is very serious, and according to the website Index.hr, doctors are fighting for her life. The young man, who immediately after the attack at school took refuge in the toilet in the nearby polyclinic, apparently cut and stabbed himself in the neck during a suicide attempt, causing serious injuries, according to television. According to one of the witnesses, he was taken away from the scene covered in blood in an ambulance with a police escort.
“And I thought that something like this could only happen in America,” remarked a grandmother who came to pick up one of the children the police had evaluated from school, according to HRT. “We are horrified,” Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovič commented on the incident at the Zagreb school. He added that after consultation with the government, he will determine the day when there will be national mourning throughout Croatia.
