Upon arriving at the scene, the firemen discovered that there was a fire in the corridor of the building, which was heavily smoky. There were about thirty people inside, including children, who had to be evacuated. Health workers have declared an emergency with mass disability.
However, the darkest fears were not confirmed in the end. According to the spokesman of the regional rescue service, Martin Štěpán, paramedics took four injured persons to the hospital who had inhaled smoke.
“In the morning, someone knocked on our door saying that it was on fire. When I opened it, there was black smoke everywhere. I grabbed the child and my partner and I tried to get to the exit. We had to have a rag over our mouths. You couldn’t see a step. We held on to the wall,” a 30-year-old resident of the hostel told Novinkám.
