Drivers are not rocket science, but various restrictions, rules or exceptions can sometimes confuse even experienced matadors.

Group AM
With an AM group driver’s license, you are allowed to independently drive vehicles with a design speed of up to 45 kilometers per hour from the age of 15. For two-wheelers, the internal combustion engine volume is still limited to 50 cubic centimeters, or the electric motor to 4 kW. For three-wheelers, the volume of the gasoline engine is limited to 50 cubic centimeters, and other engines to a power of 4 kW.

The new Aixams have a factory output of 6 kW, but the Czech importer reduces it to 4 kW so that these cars can be driven in our country from the age of 15
This section also includes four-wheeled vehicles with a maximum unloaded weight of 350 kilograms and a gasoline engine with a volume of up to 50 cubic centimeters or another engine with an output of up to 4 kW.
Group A1
In order to be able to legally drive a machine with a sidecar (or without) belonging to group A1, the volume of the internal combustion engine of the vehicle in question must be up to 125 cubic centimeters, its maximum power must be 11 kW and the power-to-weight ratio must not exceed 0.1 kW/kg. Three-wheel motor vehicles may be tuned to a maximum of 15 kW. The age limit then starts at 16 years.

Group A1 is sufficient, for example, for the Honda CB125R model
What else can you drive: AM, four-wheeled vehicles with an engine power of up to 15 kW, with an unloaded weight of up to 400 kg and an internal combustion engine displacement of up to 125 cm3
Group A2
It is possible to legally pick up a driver for group A2 only after passing the tests and reaching the age of 18. Vehicles of this group must have a limited engine power, to a maximum of 35 kW and a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.2 kW/kg. Furthermore, these vehicles must not be modified from a motorcycle with more than twice the power. The law here again permits a sidecar.

With a group B driver’s license, which can be obtained at the earliest at the age of 18, in addition to cars with a total weight of 3,500 kg, you may drive motorcycles with an engine volume of up to 125 cubic centimeters and a power of 11 kW, if the machine is equipped with an automatic transmission. Furthermore, you can tow a trailer with a total weight of up to 750 kg or drive a vehicle, if the total weight of both vehicles does not exceed 3.5 tons.

Probably the most useful driver’s license for the masses is, of course, the group B license, which you can get at almost every driving school
Example: car (3,500 kg) + trailer (750 kg), car (2,500 kg) + trailer (1,000 kg)
What else can you drive: AM, A1 with automatic transmission, A three-wheeler (from 21 years), B1, B78
Tractor: if it is a vehicle up to 3.5 tons, then only group B is sufficient, but if it is forestry equipment or a construction machine, a driver’s license is required
Group B96
With the harmonized code B96 entered in the driver’s license, you may tow a vehicle consisting of two vehicles, where the trailer vehicle exceeds the total weight of 750 kg and the sum of the total weights of both vehicles exceeds 3,500 kg, but does not exceed 4,250 kg.

Do you know the group B96? If you want to occasionally drive heavier trailers, maybe this is the solution for you

Possession of a D driver’s license means that you may drive motor vehicles intended for the transport of persons with more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat, to which a trailer with a maximum permitted weight not exceeding 750 kilograms may be connected. The standard age for obtaining a license is 24 years, but exceptions apply here as well.

It is possible to drive full-size buses at the age of 21, but there are a few requirements
You can get behind the wheel of a full-size bus as early as 21 years old, if it concerns, for example, vehicles of the IZS, customs administration, army, prison services, municipal police or cars that must be test driven as part of the service.

Furthermore, from the age of 21, you can get a “kid” as part of the introductory training according to a special legal regulation, or if you hold a professional driver’s license and have undergone initial training according to a special legal regulation in an extended scope.

For a classic bus, as we all know it, you need a group D driver’s license

Only with a D+E driver’s license do you become the real bus manager
Other conditions: ownership D
What else can you drive: AM, B+E, D1+E

Every farmer should have a group T permit, which allows from the age of 17 to drive tractors and self-propelled work machines to which a trailer may be attached.

Photo: Zetor
You can legally drive a tractor from the age of 17, you only need a group T driver’s license
So now you will have a clear idea of what you can drive with the given group, or from how many years you can get the license in question. For most of us, the classic “B” is probably enough, which, of course, contains a number of additional driving bonuses. If you don’t have it yet, we advise you to start training at a driving school as soon as possible. It is possible that soon the legislation will change and you will then receive “papers” only for the exam.
