The accident happened around six thirty in the afternoon. The driver was driving from Čeladná towards Frýdlant nad Ostravicí. “During a dangerous overtaking, she endangered the driver of the overtaken and the oncoming vehicle, then drove off the road onto the sidewalk, where she hit two minor girls,” police spokeswoman Kateřina Kubzová described the collision.
Witnesses first helped the injured girls. A nurse was among them. “The operator was also in contact with her by means of a video call, thanks to which he gained a real overview of the situation on the spot and was able to verify the current condition of the injured and the correctness of the aid provided,” said the spokesman for the Moravian-Silesian rescuers, Lukáš Humpl.
He added that one of the girls seriously injured her head and hand in the accident. “The paramedics carried out the necessary immobilization and provided intravenous access. The doctor had to put the girl into artificial sleep, secure the airway by intubation and connect her to artificial pulmonary ventilation. She was airlifted to the emergency department of the Ostrava University Hospital in a very serious condition,” he informed.
The second girl, who injured her leg, was taken to the same hospital in a stable condition. “The rescuers gave her pain and consciousness-reducing drugs and secured her leg with a special extension splint,” said Huml.
Police spokeswoman Kubzová confirmed that the driver did not help the injured girls after the collision and left the scene of the accident. “The police and the dog handler immediately started looking for her. Shortly before 6 p.m. she was found near the railway line, where she was hit by a passing train,” she pointed out, adding that the injured woman was taken to the hospital. There she underwent a breath test for alcohol, which ended up positive.
Criminal investigators are investigating the accident, the woman is suspected of causing serious injury due to negligence and failure to provide assistance.
According to police spokeswoman Kubzová, shortly before the accident, a cyclist was also riding in the same direction, whose testimony would be welcome by criminal investigators. You can contact us during working hours by calling 974 732 445 or at any time on line 158.
