The Ukrainian unit found itself in a situation where the Russian forces managed to consolidate their positions in the basements near their positions. Modern technologies were not enough to achieve the goal here. Repeated attempts to eliminate Russian forces through drones and artillery fire were not successful.
In an attempt to resolve the situation, a plan was created that counted on the fact that one of the soldiers would carry an improvised explosive charge directly into the area occupied by Russian soldiers.
The commander of the 4th “Force of Freedom” regiment of the Ukrainian National Guard, nicknamed Hnědý, said in an interview with the independent project Ukrainian Witness that there were approximately 30 Russian soldiers at the site.
At the same time, he emphasizes that this is an extremely risky procedure that most armies would not choose under normal circumstances. “Only a psychopath would do such a thing. And we are psychopaths,” he says. He describes that in the conditions of this front line, such an action can represent one of the few possibilities to break through the strongly secured position of the opponent.
The movement of the soldier was monitored by specialists and drone operators directly from the background, which is intended for this purpose. They continuously evaluated the situation and provided him with navigation instructions via radio communication. After carrying the charge to the designated location and moving to a safe distance, the operators successfully detonated the explosive.
Pokrovsk is an important logistics center for the supply of Ukrainian troops in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. Its conquest would provide the Russian army with a base for advancing towards the two largest cities that Ukraine still controls in the Donetsk region, Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
