The whole of Cuba was hit by a blackout – Novinky

The AP agency writes about the deepening energy and economic crisis and refers to the statement of the Cuban Ministry of Energy, which informs on the X network about the “complete disconnection” of the electrical network that it is investigating.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel said on Friday that the island nation, which before January’s regime change in Venezuela was largely dependent on oil supplies from the Latin American country, has not received any oil for more than three months and is operating mainly on solar power, natural gas and thermal power plants.

Because of this, Cuba repeatedly found itself without electricity. In addition to Monday, this also happened last week, then last year in December and in September.

In early January, US President Donald Trump ordered a halt to Venezuelan oil supplies to Cuba after the US kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. At the end of January, the head of the White House signed a decree according to which any country that supplies oil to Cuba is threatened with tariffs. This discouraged another important supplier – Mexico.

On Monday, Trump said that Cuba wishes to conclude an agreement with the United States. According to him, Washington will either close it soon or do what it considers necessary. In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly expressed himself about Cuba. For example, he also said that the Cuban government will fall very soon, and talked about a possible “peaceful takeover of Cuba” by the United States.

The island country is facing one of the worst economic crises in recent decades. Due to the lack of oil, it had to introduce a number of restrictive measures and significantly reduced basic services. In addition, it is faced with the daily limitation of electricity supplies.
