The 5.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Greece a day ago has caused serious material consequences. Many homes, temples and public buildings have been damaged due to the post-seismic activity.
Schools and kindergartens in many areas of Epirus will be closed today in order to inspect the buildings for possible damage. The decision was made only with the safety of students, teachers and the school community as a whole in mind. A similar decision was also taken in the Municipality of Igoumenica, where the operation of all educational structures, from kindergartens to high schools, as well as municipal KDAPs, was suspended.
“After the relevant contacts with the civil defense services, it is considered appropriate to suspend the operation of all Nurseries and Child Care Centers, Kindergartens, Primary Schools, Middle Schools, High Schools and Child Care Centers located within the boundaries of the Municipality of Igoumenica, for Monday, March 9, 2026.it is stated in the decision of the municipality of Igoumenica.
At the same time, it is noted that the great earthquake that occurred in Thesproti has caused serious material damage to many houses (mainly old) but also to holy temples and public buildings.
According to the data so far, the most affected villages are in the Municipality of Dodona and the Municipal Units of Selles and Dodona.
Teachers and other staff have been asked to remain in their positions in order to facilitate access for City Hall teams, who are conducting inspections.
