There are only six working days left until the end of the constitutional deadline for the election of the new president of Kosovo, but there are still no official candidates and no concrete agreement between the political parties. Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated a few days ago that he is making maximum efforts to avoid early elections, which would be inevitable if the election of the head of state fails. So far, there is only talk about the need for a consensual figure, but without a specific name.
The mandate of the current president, Vjosa Osmani, ends on April 4, while the deadline for the election of the new president is March 4. According to RTK, if the election is not reached by then, the country will have to go to new parliamentary elections within 45 days.
The meetings held in recent days between party leaders have not produced concrete results, at least not according to public statements. The situation remains unclear, both in terms of potential names and any possible political agreement.
After speculation about a candidacy from the Jashari family – an idea mentioned by the chief diplomat Glauk Konjufca as a figure that would ensure broad consensus – the family itself has denied interest in this post. Meanwhile, the opposition parties emphasize that the next president should be a personality of high reputation, proven integrity at home and abroad, as well as with important intellectual contributions.
The head of the PDK Parliamentary Group, Arian Tahiri, has stated that his party is ready to propose a candidate, underlining that it remains open to discussions on the standards and attributes that the next president must meet.
On the other hand, LDK considers that the responsibility to lead the process belongs to the party winning the elections. Deputy Kujtim Shala emphasized that this issue is in the hands of the majority, adding that there were no specific internal discussions on names.
The Vetëvendosje movement, meanwhile, has not yet come out with a public position regarding the possible candidacies.
