The murder of Arlinda Zekaj in Kosovo, Haxhiu: the Special Prosecutor’s Office should be involved in the investigation

The Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, has requested that the Special Prosecutor’s Office engage in the investigation of the murder of Arlinda Zekajt, including the actions and inactions of institutional officials.

After the meeting of the Presidency of the Assembly, Haxhiu spoke about the work of the Parliamentary Investigative Commission, which was formed after the murder of Zekaj and which has already started meetings.

Haxhiu has assessed that the investigation of this case should also include the responsibility of the institutions, namely the actions, omissions or wrong actions of the officials involved.

According to her, the engagement of the Special Prosecutor’s Office is necessary, since in this case high-level officials are mentioned, including chief prosecutors, prosecutors, members of the Police and other institutional officials.

“Without a doubt, the prosecution would have to deal with investigations in this case, respectively, the Special Prosecution would have to be engaged in conducting investigations in relation to the actions and inactions or wrong actions of each official in the case of the tragic murder of Arlinda Zekaj”, said Haxhiu.

She emphasized that the Investigative Commission will serve as an additional mechanism to examine the case and prepare a final document, which will then be forwarded to the responsible prosecution.

“The Investigative Commission is just an additional mechanism that will finally compile a document for this case and send it to the responsible prosecution, I wish it would be the Special Prosecution, because it includes high officials, chief prosecutors, prosecutors, police, other officials of the institutions, therefore it falls within the scope of this prosecution”, she said.

Arlinda Zekaj was killed on October 25 in Vitomirica, Peja, by her brother-in-law, Albert Sylaj, who was arrested in Deçan, after two days of searching.
