The world of Greek art and beyond has been shocked by the news of the passing away of popular folk singer Giorgos Mazonakis.
He died at the age of 54, after being rushed to the “Elpis” hospital in Athens, where the doctors failed to revive him, despite their efforts.
According to initial information, the death of Giorgos Mazonakis is attributed to cardiac arrest, while the Ministry of Health has confirmed the sad news.
Giorgos Mazonakis was born on March 4, 1972 in Nicaea, Piraeus, originally from Sitia, Crete. He grew up listening to classic folk songs by big names such as Stratos Dionysiou, Yiannis Parios, Marinella and Haris Alexiou, while his influences also included international rock music.
At the age of 15, he decided to follow the path of music as a professional. He made his debut in a nightclub in Patra, where in the summer of 1992 he was discovered by the record company Polygram (today Universal Music).
Mazonakis’ first album, “Midnight and something”, was released in 1993. Only a year later, the album “Me ta matia na to les” took him to the top of the charts with popular hits such as “3 to proy”, “Anikho se mēna” and “Mi mou tserais”.
In 1996, the song “I Miss You” went gold, while the album “Child of the Night” in 1997 achieved great success by being declared platinum.
He continued to release successful albums and singles, collaborating with well-known artists of the Greek scene.
Mazonakis was noted for his unique temperament, unique interpretation and pioneering style that changed the way of nightlife in Athens. His performances in the most popular clubs of the Greek capital turned into special events for the public.
