Kosovo will go to new national elections, in June at the latest, after the Assembly failed to elect a new president within the constitutional deadline, which ended at the last minute of April 28.
“The elections will be announced within the constitutional deadline”, said the speaker of the parliament, Albulena Haxhiu, when she put the “lock” on the Assembly, 1 minute after the entrance on April 29.
Despite several attempts and successive sessions, the political parties failed to secure the necessary votes for the election of the head of state. Vetëvendosje proposed 4 candidates, twice out of two, but failed to secure a total of 80 votes, which it could only do with the help of the opposition.
Vetëvendosje proposed Glauk Konjufca and Fatmire Kollçak in the first attempt, while Feride Rushiti and Hatixe Hoxha in the second. The “magic” number of 80 votes was not secured for them, as the opposition refused to be part of these efforts.
LDK was involved in a small opportunity to become part of an agreement with VV, but the latter refused to accept the preferred option of the Democratic League, Vjosa Osmani for “repeated” president.
The PDK all along refused to cooperate with the VV on the matter of the president, but in an earlier period it had requested that it propose two candidates for president, so that one of them would be elected. This was not accepted by Vetëvendosje. The elections expected to be held are the third in the last 15 months for Kosovo.
