Water from the raging Moravia flooded houses in Chomoutov

Not only the streets on the left bank of the river towards Štěpánov – Čapka Drahlovského, Štěpánovská, Písečná or Za Moravou, but also the streets on the right bank of the Morava, for example Hrachoviska or the locality Kopernik, were flooded in Chomoutov in the course of Monday evening and Tuesday night. Among other things, she found herself under water. a turntable at the final bus stop or a memorial to the victims of war.

In Chomoutov there was also a blackout of electricity supplies. There are problems with the sewage system. “Firefighters are pumping water out of it so that it can start working after the level has equalized with the groundwater,” Olomouc mayor Miroslav Žbánek (ANO) said.

Although the Morava River was supposed to peak on Wednesday in the morning, it happened a day earlier. On Tuesday morning, approximately 310 cubic meters of water flowed through the city per second, forty cubic meters more than originally expected. The level is already gradually decreasing.

Chomoutov, which is the first part of Olomouc where the Morava River flows, is also the only one flooded. Elsewhere, flood protection structures have started working. Chomoutov is waiting for the implementation of more significant anti-flood measures, despite the fact that floods affect it repeatedly.

Locals build a sandbag barrier on Monday evening.

“We knew that the part of the city that had already undergone the construction of flood defenses did not need to be afraid of heavy water. Even though at the beginning it was not entirely clear how much water was rushing towards us from the Jeseníky and Litovelské Pomoraví, in the end the forecast of the flow profile came true as expected,” stated Žbánek.

In Chomoutov, the water poured out exactly according to the flood maps that the flood commission and the crisis team had available. “This is the most fundamental turning point compared to the floods of 1997 or 2006. It turned out that the flood protection, as it was calculated and built, worked relatively precisely,” added the mayor.

The memorial to the victims of the war was also under water.

“Well, that’s a dude, he’s got it so calculated. Rather, I would be interested in when something will finally be done against water in our country. That is, as a preventive measure, not until it arrives again,” Jan told Novinkám, observing the flood in Čapka Drahlovského Street.

“The city will be dealing with the consequences of the flood in Chomoutov in the following hours and days. Next comes the cleaning of roads, decontamination of wells, but also social assistance to people affected by floods,” promises the municipality in a press release.

Lagoons have formed in some places in Olomouc, but they do not pose a threat to anyone. Road 570, which connects the local parts of Holice and Nové Sady in the fields, was also flooded. According to estimates, this Kepler street will be impassable for two more days.
