Von der Leyen concludes the Balkan tour in Skopje: Constitutional changes are key to the path to the EU

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, concluded her Balkan tour with a visit to Skopje, where she emphasized Brussels’ support for North Macedonia’s path to membership in the European Union.

“You can count on us. The next and only step before the start of negotiations is clear. You must make the agreed constitutional change. The ball is in your court. The EU is ready,” she wrote on the X network after meetings with the country’s leaders.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski emphasized the government’s determination to accelerate European integration through concrete results and the fulfillment of European standards.

“North Macedonia expects clear and concrete commitment from the European Union, as a confirmation of the European perspective and support for the citizens, who for decades remain committed to European values,” said Mickoski.

He said that the talks also focused on the European perspective of the country, the progress of reforms, economic cooperation, energy security and digital transformation.

During the visit, Von der Leyen also met with President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi and Foreign Minister Timço Mucunski.
