On Pristina’s Liberation Day, former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), dressed in its uniforms, marched through the capital’s squares demanding the release of former KLA leaders who are being tried in The Hague.
The veterans emphasized that the KLA’s war was just and that the judicial process against its former leaders is unfair. They expressed optimism that the former leaders will soon return to Kosovo.
Asllan Doshi, disabled war veteran and former Togu deputy commander, said that the march is an expression of respect for all those who contributed to the liberation of the country.
“We believe that the release should be immediate, because this process is an unfair trial of our liberation struggle.”
Even the veteran Hajzer Bistrica recalled his commitment from the first days of the war until the liberation of the country. He said he feels proud to be a living witness to the sacrifice of that period.
“I carried the weaponry from Albania to Kosovo to help our soldiers. I am proud that today I am a living witness of that sacrifice.”
Bistrica added that the former leaders of the KLA would not have to face the judicial process in The Hague and that he expects their return to Kosovo as soon as possible.
The Commander of the Fifth Operative Zone Llap-Gollak, Islam Kelmendi, emphasized that the uniform of the KLA remains a sacred symbol for the fighters and that every appearance with it awakens the emotions of wartime.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Pristina, Përparim Rama, thanked the veterans for participating in the march, describing the activity as a commemoration of the sacrifice of martyrs and families who contributed to the country’s freedom.
“Congratulations on June 11, the Liberation Day of the capital! Glory to all the martyrs and families who have given everything so that today we can be free and celebrate this wonderful day in peace.”
